Strategic Studies in Pakistan: A Conversation with Sadia Tasleem at Global South Adda

In this episode of Global South Adda, Sadia Tasleem (McGill University, Canada, and Quaid-i-Azam University, Pakistan) discusses the state of strategic studies in Pakistan. We chat about Sadia's journey in academia and her views on the dominance of Waltzian thinking in Pakistan’s strategic studies. She explains the reasons for the absence of theoretical eclecticism in Pakistan’s IR, and what she sees as the mimicking of American models – both ideational as well as institutional – in the country. In a field that is notoriously dominated by military men, how does she navigate the professional work space as a woman scholar and as someone who is seen as an outsider? Finally, she weighs in on the pains of teaching in a system that can seem frustratingly broken but also the pleasures of learning from the students whose knowledge of the street is amazingly enriching and humbling.
