Bridges y Puentes - Margate 2014

Originally inspired by the emergence of tango within the immigrant population of the ‘conventillos’ (apartment blocks) of Buenos Aires, Bridges uses a multiplicity of languages – spoken, sung, played, and danced – to explore the experience of migration. Bridges is a promenade performance, usually presented in covered car-parks or similar urban spaces. The audience are invited to step inside many different pairs of shoes as they witness a performance that evolves from, then disappears into, thin air. First made by Ragroof Theatre in collaboration with Compagnie Vendaval in 2012, and featuring artists from England, France, Spain and Argentina, Bridges has previously been presented at street arts festivals in France and the UK. It is being substantially reworked by The Ragroof Players for 2014, where it will be presented in a car-park in Margate (see Calendar on this site for dates announcement). Interviews with migrants in every place that the show has been presented have informed the development of the show, and form an integral part of the soundscape and imagery, which fuses together a beautiful mix of live and recorded music from all corners of the world. Each new version of the show builds on previous texts, creating a rich kaleidoscope of words, images and sounds from a multitude of sources. Bridges y Puentes Margate '14 is funded by Arts Council South East, Heritage Lottery, Margate Arts and Creativity Heritage (MACH- Thanet Council) and Kent Council (Kent Art Investment Fund and Kent County Council Combined Members Grants Fund). Supported by Resort Studios, Theatre Royal Margate, Turner Contemporary (as part of their Summer of Colour Programme), Panther Securities and Saint Paul's Community Centre, Cliftonville.
