Dedicated to the birthday of Russian Telnyashka of the Central Naval Museum
The Central Naval Museum after the Emperor Peter the Great invites everyone to visit annual thematic events, dedicated to the birthday of Russian Telnyashka – sailor’s striped shirt. According to the event’s program different special exhibitions, concerts, film screengs, virtual quiz and other thematic projects will take place during the last decade of August. As usual, their exhibition project will be presented by Dmitriy Shagin and The Mitki creative association. This annual Russian Telnyashka exhibition project in the Central Naval Museum is dedicated to a very important historical date in the history of The World War II – 80th anniversary of Arctic Convoys. That is why, today for the first time we present our news release in English to honor our allies. On a special exhibition «Nord-Ost ahead» placed in the atrium of the museum, visitors will observe the materials from the museum funds, such as: unique photographs taken by Northern Fleet photojournalists, watercolors and graphic works (including those of frontline artists), Arctic Convoys uniform, flags of Northern Fleet submarines and surface ships, escorted by them. The matter of special interest are photographs of sailors — crew members of the escorting ships, and materials on different joined activities of the fellowship in arms, born during the years of the World War Two. The first ships procession (under the code name “Dervish”) arrived to the city of Archangelsk on the 31st of August of the 1941. It was the first freight (фрейт) shipment, very essential for Soviet Union in the beginning of the World War II. Arctic Convoys became one of the brightest examples of international collaboration in the mutual cause of victory. 1398 ships have been escorted along the Arctic Convoy route during the years of WWII. Our mutual victory has been forged by allies in anti-Hitler coalition. It wasn’t really important what differs Russian, British or American uniform, how many stripes are there on their shirts or are any at all. Regardless the flag, heroes of this dramatical epopee had equal chances to die under enemy’s bullets and bombs and stay forever in cold waters of Northern Atlantic and Barents sea. During the convoy operations there were lost 85 units of transport, 16 warships and 3000 sailors.
