If you hit him through the boss fog with a spell such as rock sling, his AI will break. Once you hit him 4 or 5 times, traverse the fog, but don't get to close to him or stagger him as this will cause his AI to get fixed. I used both scarlet rot tipped and poison tipped bolts/arrows. My advice is to aim bolts and arrows at his body and not his face, as not to stagger him.
