JPS DSP 2 and DSP 3 Interoperability with WAIS Using our Audio Switches to Interconnect Communities
DSP-2 and DSP-3 Interoperability with WAIS Dispatch functionality, the ability for a Wide Area Interoperability System, known as WAIS, allowing the operator to converse through his or her computer to a WAIS end-user, is available in the WAIS Enhanced version of the WAIS Controller. This version allows the Controller to make use of the PC’s sound card, microphone, and speakers (or headset) to move voice traffic to and from DSP-3 modules (also called dispatch modules) and their associated radios. These DSP-3 modules can be installed in these ACU gateways: the ACU-1000, the ACU-2000, and the ACU-T. WAIS Controller version 2.32 adds the ability to dispatch to NXU-2A units which have their Dispatch option enabled. Dispatch Functionality and Terminology From the WAIS Controller’s (and operator’s) point of view, audio coming in from a Dispatch Module is either selected audio or monitor audio. Monitor audio comes from a Dispatch Module that is being monitored by the operator and cannot hear when the operator talks. Selected audio comes from a Dispatch Module that is in a two-way conversation with the operator, i.e. the module can hear audio from the operator. WAIS Enhanced Requirements The computer on which the WAIS Controller (Enhanced) is installed must have, in addition to normal requirements: • A sound card (just about anything will suffice, even built-in sound cards) • A headset (recommended) OR a microphone and set of speakers The ACU units in the WAIS itself must be equipped with one or more DSP-3 modules, which provide points of audio contact with Controllers as described in the next section. Also, NXU-2A modules which have their Dispatch Option enabled may also be used for Dispatch purposes. The DSP-3 Module Like a DSP-2, the DSP-3 accepts a DB-15 connection to a radio and can form local groups with other modules via the ACU backplane, but the DSP-3 is the only module that can also simultaneously communicate directly with a WAIS Controller via the network. The DSP-3 can use all three of its interfaces (radio, backplane, and network) at the same time, routing audio between the Controller, the radio and the backplane. At least one DSP-3 is necessary for each site that desires dispatch capability. DSP-3s cannot be used as NXMs. In order to form network groups, DSP-2s set up as NXMs are still needed. Note that it’s not necessary to connect a radio to the rear panel connector associated with a DSP-3. Without an associated radio, a DSP-3 can still be used for dispatch communications, but only for communications devices that are linked to other modules in the ACU, and cross-connected to the DSP-3.
