TechTalk New Zealand – Smart City Digital Plumbing – Riki Williscroft – Auckland Transport

The eighth TechTalk on 26 September 2019 at Massey University Summary: At Auckland Transport our goal is Easy Journeys; safe, efficient, convenient, and we are constantly striving to innovate to achieve that. As populations grow cities are becoming increasingly critical to our species survival, preserving arable land and eco-diversity. For cities to be able to grow without imploding under their own mass they need to become extremely efficient at managing the necessities of urban living. Tens of thousands of cameras, sensors, and connected devices make up a smart city creating a coordinated responsive environment that adapts to a population’s constantly changing demands. This is great but it is creating peta bytes of data that needs to be collected analysed and stored. In addition are the devices themselves that need to be deployed, managed, repaired or replaced. This is the boring stuff that makes things happen, good ideas are great but they are no use if they can't work day in, day out without maintenance, and all the data in the world is of no value if you cant collect and use it. In this video Riki will talk about his experience at Auckland Transport and how they manage this big data.
