Takoushis Karapatakis project "A Drop Of 1000 Truths"
A DROP OF 1000 TRUTHS From the album Colours Of Another Sky Gabriel Karapatakis composition, fretless bass, vocals Marios Takoushis piano, vocals David Lynch soprano sax, Zacharias Spyridakis cretan lyra, vocals TAKOUSHIS KARAPATAKIS project COLOURS OF ANOTHER SKY Marios Takoushis’ and Gabriel Karapatakis’ new musical deposition most definitely is not characterized by the angst of self-classification, because it does not pretend to be something; it quite simply IS. It does not engage in loud conversation with any given tradition, because its “memories” – both those arising from the “voices” (or modes) of the two artists’ birthplace, as well as those stemming from the global course of the genre to which it belongs (that of Jazz) – are deeply embedded, inseparably intertwined even, in its musical corpus. Thus, there are moments when the music feels familiar, but yet there are others, and this most times, when one experiences the feeling that one is hearing something entirely new, something never heard before. There are moments when certain motifs bring to mind “sweet memories”, even though it’s impossible for the listener to determine with any certainty their precise origins. This occurs because our artists’ dialectical conversation with their sources and roots takes place at a great depth and does not merely skim the surface. In this way, listening to their music, one feels inundated by a musical experience both novel and newfound, yet at the same time loaded with memories. And it’s precisely for this reason that one ceases to be interested in telltale signs of recognition. One lets oneself be taken away by the “gift” of the music’s magical journey; a music which touches the highest possible levels of quality, where genre-based boundaries between the traditional and the modern no longer exist. Michalis Pieris (translated by Andreas Iacovides) The Takoushis Karapatakis Project is a contemporary jazz ensemble from Cyprus formed around the core duo pianist/composer Marios Takoushis and bassist/ composer Gabriel Karapatakis. While borrowing elements from Cypriot folk music as well as from neighbouring Mediterranean traditions (Crete, Greece or Asia minor). Their discography has received critical and audience acclaim in Europe, and their music has been included in the EBU’s jazz album, The Music of Europe. The Takoushis Karapatakis Project exudes a modern unique European jazz sound based on strong melodic and lyrical compositions. Self-released in June 2015 last, Colours of Another Sky is the Project’s third recording. Available at http://www.takoushiskarapatakis.com, all digital stores and streaming services!
