The Rise of Trading Empires Session # 2
This is the third topic of World Civilizations II which examines the rise of trading empires from 1500 to the 1700s AD. This second session continues looking at the trading empires, in this case it begins with the Portuguese and the new commercial network they built first in West Africa, and then later in the Indian Ocean. This lecture pays close attention to the diplomatic and cultural relationships they built with the Kingdom of the Kongo, as well as the trade they establish with the kingdoms of Senegal and Angola. Also, it discusses the mechanisms they employed to monopolize trade in the Indian Ocean. The last portion covers the rise of the Spanish trading empire in the Western Hemisphere, which focuses on the conquest of the Aztec and Inca empires, the efforts to convert the native population to Christianity as part of a spiritual conquest, and the imposition of economic institutions thereafter such as Encomienda, Hacienda, Plantations, and Silver mining.
