"Live A Live" is a role-playing video game that was developed and published by Square (now Square Enix) for the Super Famicom (Super Nintendo Entertainment System) in Japan in 1994. The game was directed by Takashi Tokita and written by Yoshinori Kitase, who would later go on to direct and write for some of Square's most famous games, such as "Final Fantasy VII" and "Chrono Trigger." The game consists of seven different chapters, each with its own protagonist and story, that take place in different time periods and settings, such as prehistoric times, feudal Japan, a Western town, a post-apocalyptic future, and more. Each chapter has its own gameplay mechanics and unique challenges, such as a stealth mission in a ninja village, a maze-like dungeon in an ancient pyramid, and a puzzle-solving segment in a futuristic laboratory. One of the unique aspects of "Live A Live" is the "Battle Ring" system, which allows the player to engage in one-on-one battles with various enemies and bosses using different combat styles, such as martial arts, magic, and guns. Each protagonist has their own Battle Ring moveset and special techniques, and the player must learn and master them in order to progress through the game. "Live A Live" received critical acclaim upon its release in Japan, with reviewers praising its innovative storytelling and gameplay, as well as its music and graphics. However, the game was never officially released outside of Japan, although it has since gained a cult following and has been translated into English by fan translators. In 2021, Square Enix announced that "Live A Live" would be included as a bonus game in the collection "Actraiser Renaissance," which was released for the Nintendo Switch. This marks the first official release of "Live A Live" outside of Japan, and allows players to experience the game's unique blend of storytelling and gameplay on a modern platform. In 2022 it was released worldwide for the switch including those who did not initially get it.
