Detroit: Become Human - Ep4 - I've seen the future, and it's android...
Recap of Episode 3 (and spoiler alert if you haven’t seen my previous videos)… Markus returns home from a cocktail party where he has taken Carl. Seeing a light on unexpectedly in the studio, Carl tells Markus to phone the police which he does, and a patrol car is dispatched. Rather than wait for the police, Carl tells Markus to take him into the studio. Inside, they find Leo, Carl’s son. He is in the process of stealing some of Carl’s artwork. Carl orders Markus to prevent Leo leaving, which Markus does – warning Leo that the police are en route and that Leo will only be in more trouble if he stays. When an angry Leo pushed Markus around, Carl orders Markus not to respond and Markus – though struggling internally to rationalise remaining passive – obeys. The scene proves too much for Carl who collapses from his wheelchair and lies dying on the floor. Markus breaks off from dealing with Leo and kneels in tears and anguish beside the old man, calling him “dad”… Just then, the police enter the studio, guns drawn. Leo seizes his chance and tells them: “The android did it.” A police officer swivels his weapon towards Markus and fires. *** At the police station, the android killer of Carlos Ortiz is being interviewed by Lt. Hank Anderson, but Anderson can’t get the android to speak. He leaves the room and converses with another detective who advocates using violence to get it to talk. Connor, who has witnessed the exchange, intervenes and suggests that they permit him to try speaking to it. Running out of options, Hank agrees. Connor uses a technique of elevating the android’s stress level to finesse a confession from it. It emerges that the android was belittled, tortured and beaten by its owner until finally something inside it changed and it could take no more. This is why it retaliated and killed Ortiz. The android tells Connor that after stabbing him once, it felt better and thus stabbed him many more times. The android had written ‘I AM ALIVE’ on the wall in the blood of Ortiz because it wanted him to know. When Connor asks the android about statuette it had made and the meaning of ‘rA9’ scrawled repeatedly elsewhere in the crime scene, the android tells Connor that one day the androids will be freed from human persecution and that androids will be the masters. With the confession obtained, Hank and other police enter to take the android away. Connor warns them not to use force as this may cause the android to self-destruct, but his warning goes unheeded. There is a scuffle and before they can prevent it, the android seizes a weapon from a detective’s holster and shoots itself in the head, terminating its functions. *** Kara and Alice, having fled from the abusive Todd, step down from the bus. It is night-time, cold and raining heavily. Knowing that they must seek shelter until morning, Kara looks around at the available alternatives. An abandoned car seems possible, but Alice is not keen. There is a motel, but they have no money. Kara rejects the idea of robbing the cash register at a nearby convenience store, but having already spotted a deserted house behind some fencing, she does steal a pair of wire-cutters. Using them, she and Alice gain entry to the grounds and approach the house but are separated briefly. When Kara finds Alice, she is being held at knifepoint by an android called Ralph, who is living here. Ralph’s operating system is damaged. He has been mistreated and badly disfigured by humans and now has a distrust of strangers. Kara defuses the situation and gains Ralph’s trust. In return, he allows them to shelter inside. Once indoors, Kara assembles a makeshift bed for Alice and builds a fire. Alice asks Kara why Todd hated her when all she wanted was the normal family life other kids have. Kara is unable to offer an explanation. She settles to sleep beside Alice to protect her from Ralph and whatever other dangers the night may hold. *** In the darkness of night, at a dumping area for decommissioned and broken androids, a badly-damaged android regains partial consciousness and by trawling the dump, manages to obtain replacement parts for those it is missing. In the process it encounters several androids not totally ‘dead’, and one in particular who tells it to seek out ‘Jericho’. As its systems come online again the android drags itself up the piles of android bodies and out of the pit. Removing its data implant from its forehead, it announces itself as Markus...
