Toshi Ichiyanagi - Time Sequence

Toshi Ichiyanagi (一柳慧, 1933-) is a Japanese composer and pianist. Ichiyanagi came to the United States in 1954 and studied at the Juilliard School of Music until 1957. He studied with Tomojirō Ikenouchi, Kishio Hirao, and John Cage. He has been honored with Japan's Order of Culture. By the way, Ichiyanagi was married to Yoko Ono (1933-) from 1956 to 1962. "Time Sequence"(タイム・シークエンス, 1976) is one of Ichiyanagi's early masterpieces. He heard the first performance of Steve Reich's "Piano Phase"(1967) in the United States and was influenced by minimalist music. This piece is in a style that combines repetitive left hand patterns with right hand patterns. The right hand has a variable period, which creates a phase shift. By daring to have a human perform a mechanical sound, this work questions the relationship between humans and technology. He used a similar technique to compose the "Piano Media"(1972). Left and right roles are reversed. [NOTE] This composition is premised on a human performance. As composers have said, computer player may sound brilliant; nonetheless, human performance are more appealing. What is the difference between humans and machines? If you're inspired to think about the issue, this meaningless recording may have some meaning.
