Use familiar names of classmates to help your students make a "sound-word" connection. Little students love hearing and seeing their names on the board while the rest of the class is practicing reading. I recommend doing it often as soon as you have introduced some letters but don't spend more than 3-5 minutes of your class. Short and sweet!
